Application to the University and Visa application
I was thinking that I am shortly going to write about the whole process with the application to the University. After I got the spot from my University, I also had to make an application to the University in Japan. The process was not too difficult, you had to fill in an online form, and send in a few documents by airmail. Of course, that is not something I did in one day, but I had received a warning from a former student who almost missed the deadline so I was, as we say in Swedish, "ute i god tid" = prepared everything in good time before the deadline. After I had been accepted, a few more online forms had to be filled in before the University sent me the Certificate of Eligibility, which I needed for the visa application.
If you are going to Japan and will be staying there for eg. work, studies, etc and the duration is over 3 months, then you will be needing a visa. I have a visa for students and besides studies, I´m also allowed to work part-time up to 20h/week. Although, this is not applicable in my case, because when you choose homestay it´s prohibited to work part-time. I guess this is because you should have time over to spend with your host family. It would have been cool to have a part-time job but I think the school-work alone will take up a lot of my time, so I don't mind. :)
I got my student visa two weeks ago and the whole process was really quick, it only took one week from the time that the Japanese embassy got my passport + Certificate of Eligibility until I could pick it up. One good thing to know is that you don't personally have to hand in the information to the embassy, but when you get back it has to be collected in person. It is also good to know, whatever you do, don´t lose the Certificate of Eligibility! I was too scared to send it by mail, we all swedes now how our postal system works... I would say we would have a better system if we used owls. Anyhow, I was lucky that my dear mum was going to Stockholm and she helped me out instead. Arigatou Okaasan <3
